Midsommar (Midsummer) is celebrated on the Friday and Saturday between June 19–26. In 2026, Midsommar falls on the Friday closest to the summer solstice. In Finland, Juhannus is celebrated on June 24 (or the nearest Saturday). Oslo and the surrounding region hosts festivals, outdoor concerts, and traditional celebrations.

Families enjoy dancing around the maypole (midsommarstång), picking wildflowers to make wreaths, traditional folk dancing, outdoor games, and singing traditional songs. Many parks and open-air museums in Oslo host family-friendly Midsommar events with traditional food and crafts.

Traditional Midsommar food includes fresh new potatoes with dill and sour cream, pickled herring, gravlax (cured salmon), crisp bread, and the first strawberries of the season. Many families gather outdoors for picnics and barbecues. Look for Midsommar food stalls and restaurant menus in Oslo celebrating the season.

In Sweden and Finland, Midsummer's Eve (Friday) is effectively a public holiday with most businesses closed. In Norway and Denmark, it's celebrated as St. Hans / Sankt Hans but not a formal public holiday. Expect reduced transport schedules and many outdoor events and gatherings in Oslo.
