Getting there
Funchal Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport (FNC) is 15 km east of the city — take the bus (€5, 30 min) or taxi (€20–25, 20 min). There are no rail connections on the island; public buses (SAM/Rodoeste) and taxis cover the main routes. The Funchal Cable Car links the seafront to Monte. Ferries from Portimão (mainland Portugal) take 20 hours; Porto Santo Line connects to the sister island daily.

- 1Book the cable car to Monte in the morning — queues grow fast and the panoramic view is best with clear sky.
- 2Take the wicker toboggan (carro de cesto) down from Monte — a unique 2 km ride on runners steered by carreiros in white suits.
- 3Rent a car to explore the island; levada walks (water channel trails through laurel forests) are unmissable but buses are infrequent.
- 4Poncha (aguardente + honey + lemon) is the local spirit — try it at a traditional poncha bar in Câmara de Lobos.
- 5Madeira wine is best tasted at a wine lodge in the Old Town; the island also produces excellent espada (scabbard fish) and lapas (limpets).
