The Atlantic Festival (Festival do Atlântico) runs throughout June in Funchal. The Saturday-night international fireworks competition takes place on four consecutive Saturdays in June. In 2026 the festival runs from 1 June to 30 June.

The Atlantic Festival fireworks competition is world-class. Each Saturday a different country presents a choreographed display set to music from the Funchal harbour. Teams from Portugal, Spain, France, Germany and beyond compete, launching from barges offshore. Viewing spots on the Promenade (Avenida do Mar) are free.

Beyond fireworks, the festival features free outdoor classical music concerts, folk performances, food and wine stalls along the seafront, and pop-up stages in the old town. The whole month has a festival atmosphere with something happening most evenings.

Very much so. The fireworks are safe to watch from the promenade with children (just bring ear protection for little ones). The outdoor concerts and seafront markets are relaxed and family-orientated. The Funchal cable car runs late on fireworks nights for panoramic views.
