Funchal holds a Guinness World Record for the world's largest fireworks display by perimeter. The natural amphitheatre of the hillside means you can watch from almost anywhere on the island. Up to 1.5 million visitors come each year — a staggering number for an island with only 250,000 residents.

The Promenade (Avenida do Mar) is the prime spot. The Funchal cable car to Monte runs on New Year's Eve for elevated views. Hotel terraces overlooking the bay are sold out months in advance. Many visitors walk up to the hillside roads in Monte and Camacha for free panoramic vantage points.

The main display starts at midnight on 31 December and lasts about 8 minutes — shorter than you might expect but spectacularly intense. Pre-midnight countdown events begin from around 22:00 in the city centre, with live music stages on the seafront from the late afternoon.

The week before New Year's Eve is also a festival. Outdoor concerts, street food stalls, the Christmas lights are still up, and many restaurants offer special menus. It's a wonderful time to explore the island with manageable crowds before the NYE peak.
