PaidThe Madeira Flower Festival (Festa da Flor) takes place each spring in Funchal, typically from the last Saturday of April through the first Sunday of May. In 2026 the festival runs from approximately 25 April to 11 May.
The Wall of Hope (Muro da Esperança) is the most touching moment of Festa da Flor: thousands of children place flowers into a mosaic wall outside the Câmara Municipal (Town Hall). The tradition dates back to 1979 and symbolises peace and hope for future generations.
Yes — two spectacular parades wind through Funchal. The Children's Parade (Cortejo Infantil) features hundreds of schoolchildren in flower costumes. The Main Allegoric Parade (Cortejo Alegórico) follows at the weekend with elaborate floats blanketed in fresh blooms. Both pass along Avenida Arriaga.
Absolutely. It's one of the best family events in Portugal. The flower carpets, costume parades, street markets and outdoor concerts are all free and very child-friendly. The mild Madeira climate in late April is perfect for long days outdoors.
